History

Rathlin holds countless myths and mysteries. In 1306, Scottish King Robert the Bruce, driven from his kingdom by England's Edward I, took refuge on the island. Legend has it that he observed a spider there, struggling to span a gap between rocks with its web. Inspired by the creature's perseverance, he returned to Scotland and eventually reclaimed his throne.

Discovering Rathlin Island

Rathlin lies some ten kilometres off the Antrim coast, at the tip of Northern Ireland. The island is home to a small community of fewer than 200 people; in fact, it's the country's only inhabited island. On clear days, to the north and east, you'll catch views of Scotland. To the south lies the town of Ballycastle.

The island offers various accommodation options and restaurants, a few shops, an open-air gym and a children's play area. The Boathouse, Rathlin's visitor centre, houses a museum offering deeper insights into the locality—its history, significant events, visits and activities.

Why Visit Rathlin Island?

If you love marine wildlife, Rathlin offers the chance to spot seals up close—Northern Ireland's coast is home to two species. The common seal stands out with its dog-like face and is rarely seen. The much larger grey seal has an elongated head and frequents exposed areas.

The island's shoreline delivers a pleasant 10-kilometre walk or so. The Rathlin West Light, renowned for its inverted shape, was constructed in 1919 on the cliff edge. Older, erected in 1856 and dismantled in 1995 (the upper beacon still operates), the Altacarry East lighthouse was used by Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi as a long-distance radio transmission antenna to monitor Canadian and American vessels. At the island's southern tip stands the Rue Point Lighthouse, built in 1921.

Prepare comfortable walking boots or hire a vehicle on the island and venture forth. You can also go diving. The waters around Rathlin conceal more than 90 shipwrecks swallowed by strong tides between 1558 and 1981. The most popular site is the HMS Drake, a Royal Navy flagship that sank in 1917.

Numerous wild animals inhabit the island. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds manages Northern Ireland's largest seabird nature reserve at Rathlin. Based in the Rathlin West Light premises, the Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre offers extensive documentation on avian species frequenting the region. The centre provides birdwatchers with an observation platform equipped with binoculars and telescopes. Rathlin hosts one of the UK and Ireland's most significant puffin populations. Ready to breed at age five, these birds can live around twenty years! The island also shelters kittiwakes, auks, guillemots, fulmars, gannets and even white-tailed eagles.

When to Visit Rathlin Island?

If you're a bird enthusiast, visit Rathlin Island between April and July, during puffin season. During this period, their beaks and feet take on a vibrant orange hue.

The Rathlin ferry departs from Ballycastle, in County Antrim. The distance between the port and the island is only six miles. It's straightforward to reach the jetty and the crossing takes little time. The voyage offers splendid views, particularly at the Moyle Strait, where the celebrated Irish legend of the Children of Lir unfolded.

Ballycastle is located roughly an hour's drive from Belfast and Londonderry. From the Irish capital Dublin, the journey takes around three hours.

While walking remains the finest way to discover the island, you may prefer cycling or visiting Rathlin aboard a local minibus. A variety of routes criss-cross the island. Hikers can choose from eight trails, either self-guided or led by a guide.
