Leitrim is a village in the county of the same name, in northwestern Irlande. However, it is not the county's capital—that distinction belongs to the town of Carrick-on-Shannon. Founded on the banks of the Shannon River, the village serves as the gateway to the Shannon-Erne Waterway. It offers a variety of activities, with cycling the floating path of the Shannon Blueway and rifle or archery shooting among the most popular.

History

Leitrim's history stretches back to the Middle Ages. Its name derives from the Irish word "Liath Druim," meaning "grey hill." It was founded in the 15th century around a castle built to protect the region from English invasions.

Over the centuries, Leitrim became an important wool production centre. Many mills were constructed along the Shannon River. In the 19th century, the Great Famine struck the region hard, triggering significant emigration to North America.

Leitrim had 594 inhabitants in 2016. It is a tranquil and peaceful village, with a rich cultural heritage and a welcoming local community.

What to Do in Leitrim?

The village of Leitrim offers a range of tourist activities. If you're passionate about hiking, numerous nature trails wind through this region. Dominated by forests and lakes, the landscape is stunning.

Just a short distance from the village bridge lies the Leitrim Shooting Gallery, where you can test your precision and marksmanship with an air rifle. The shooting range also features a dozen archery lanes.

Also near the bridge, you'll find a bicycle rental service offering a wide selection of bikes—electric or non-electric, for adults or children. Several cycling paths exist in the region, following either paved roads or minor routes. The Shannon Blueway is the most popular. This path lets you explore the shores of Lough Allen canal and also takes you along a floating boardwalk built over Acres Lake—an extraordinary experience! Once you reach Drumshanbo village, you can unwind while savouring local culinary specialities.

A historic monument can be visited at Leitrim village harbour. These are the ruins of a castle built in 1540 by Brian Rourke. Brian was a member of the O'Rourk dynasty, which ruled the kingdom of Breifne (corresponding to the present-day counties of Leitrim and Cavan) from the 10th to the 16th century. The O'Rourks were the last clan in Irlande to submit to English rule.

Leitrim village is the birthplace of John McGahern, one of Ireland's most important and talented writers of the 20th century. Among his best-known works are "The Dark" (1965), "The Leavetaking" (1974), "Amongst Women" (1990), "That They May Face the Rising Sun" (2002) and "Memoir" (2005). His writings are renowned for their spare yet evocative prose, profound introspection and exploration of complex human relationships. A museum dedicated to this great artist's life and work can be found in the village.

When to Visit?

To enjoy mild and pleasant temperatures, visit Leitrim village in spring (March to May) or summer (June to August).

Leitrim village is located near Carrick-on-Shannon. From that town, take the N4 road heading towards Sligo. After travelling 5 km, you'll see a sign indicating the exit for Leitrim. Take this exit and continue straight for approximately 3 km. You'll then arrive at the village.

The village is also accessible by bus or taxi from Carrick-on-Shannon.
